A district without a representative

Since August 2025, District 149 has had nobody casting a vote for it in the Missouri House.

Our last state representative resigned on August 21, 2025 to take a job as a district engineer with the Highway Department. That was his right, and I don't say a word against him for it. But no special election was ever called to fill the seat — ours was one of five House districts left without a vote. So Mississippi, New Madrid and northern Pemiscot counties have gone more than a year with an empty chair, and it stays empty until somebody is sworn in in January 2027.

I want people to think about what that has actually cost us.

In December, Pemiscot Memorial Hospital — a hospital just south of us in Pemiscot County — had to convert to Rural Emergency Hospital status to keep its doors open. It kept the emergency room and gave up its inpatient beds. Nobody from District 149 was in the room while decisions about rural hospitals were being made, and what happens to a hospital in our region happens to the people who drive to it from here.

The school funding formula was argued over in Jefferson City. Nobody from District 149 was at the table.

And every time somebody in these three counties had a problem with a state agency — a benefit that got cut off, a license tangled up, a form nobody would answer — the person you're supposed to call was nobody.

A state representative is not a national figure. Most of the job is being present, voting, and picking up the phone. This district has not had anyone doing that job in over a year.

On November 3rd you get to fill that chair. I'd like it to be me. I'm asking for your vote, and I appreciate it. God bless you.
